While the majority of ski resorts are planning to open, the experience is going to feel a bit different this season. With the pandemic still in full force, make sure to plan your trip in advance so that you know the COVID-19 ski resort policies before heading out to the slopes.

Each ski area is closely monitoring and enforcing Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines, and operations and ticketing procedures are anticipated to evolve in order to prioritize guest safety. Resorts’ new operating plans may impact different season pass holders and daily visitors differently.

Because of all these new changes, we have put together this comprehensive post on the different COVID-19 ski resort policies. You can use the buttons below to quickly navigate to the pass or resort you’re interested in. Make sure to keep checking back for updates as the season progresses!

Last Updated on 12/10/20: This information is subject to change at any time given the fluid nature of the COVID-19 virus. Please view the website for the ski area you’re planning to visit for the most up-to-date information.

COVID-19 Ski Resort Safety Standards

The National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) has developed operating best practices in conjunction with other industry leaders to provide guidance to ski resorts during the COVID-19 pandemic. Known as Ski Well, Be Well, these practices are based on scientific guidelines from experts and can be adapted and scaled to each ski area’s unique operational needs.

The following safety standards are being applied across all ski resorts in some form or fashion. The way policies are managed and enforced may vary resort to resort. This is meant to only serve as a guideline for what to expect on the mountains this winter.

  • Face Coverings
All ski areas are requiring guests to wear face coverings that align with CDC recommendations at all times. This includes both indoor and outdoor spaces, unless you’re eating or drinking. Places that require face coverings include, but are not limited to, ticket queues, lift lines, chairlifts and gondolas, dining facilities, retail stores, and lodges. whenever social distancing is not possible. Although face coverings are not required to be worn while actively skiing or snowboarding, it is highly recommended, especially if you cannot properly distance yourself from others.
  • Physical Distancing
All ski areas are creating operational plans that allow for appropriate spacing between parties. At several resorts, plexiglass barriers have been installed in areas where physical distancing measures are not possible, such as ticket and food sales. In addition, modifications may be made to lift loading procedures to maintain physical distancing requirements.
  • Cleaning & Sanitation
All ski areas are adopting stricter cleaning and disinfection strategies for all areas of their operations, including high-touch areas such as restrooms, restaurants, dining facilities, ticket offices, and rental stores. Many resorts have announced that the cleaning products used will follow CDC and EPA guidance on agents which are effective against the COVID-19 virus.
  • Employee Safety
All ski areas are increasing their employee safety protocols to ensure employees are healthy and safe to work. This includes implementing daily health screenings or symptom checks, as well as providing robust safety training. Most resorts have announced that their employees will be required to wear face coverings at all times while indoors, wash their hands frequently, and stay home if they are feeling sick.

Epic Pass COVID-19 Policies & Procedures

The Epic pass is operated by Vail Resorts and includes 80 destinations across the United States, Canada, Europe, and Japan. Vail Resorts owns and operates 34 of these resorts, which includes the majority of locations in North America. For these destinations, they have announced stringent policies, including a new skiing reservation system and cashless transactions, in an effort to combat the spread of COVID-19.

Therefore, the following rules are in place for destinations owned by Vail Resorts but not necessarily partner destinations. Be sure to check the individual resort’s website for the most accurate, up-to-date information regarding their policies.

Epic Capacity Management & Reservations

For guest safety, Epic pass destinations are managing on-mountain access this season to reduce capacity. Reservations to ski at any Epic destination are required, and pass holders get priority access.

Pass holders will have up to 7 Priority Reservation Days that they can book in advance, in addition to the ability to reserve as many week-of reservations as their pass type and availability allows. Reservations are first come, first served, and there will not be a waiting list. Access to the mountains and the reservation system is split into two phases.

Early Season (Nov. 6 - Dec. 7)

Skiing during the Early Season is limited to pass holders only, but reservations are still required. Reservations will be made available on a weekly basis for the upcoming week of skiing. In addition, the reservation system itself is limited to only pass holders during this time.

This means pass holders have exclusive access for a month to make reservations and lock in their Priority Reservation Days before general lift ticket sales are made available to the public. Note that changes and cancellations to reservations for the Core Season cannot be made until November 17th.

Core Season (Dec. 8 - Apr. 4)

Lift tickets go on sale to the public on December 8th for the Core Season. When you purchase your lift ticket online, it will include a reservation for a specific resort and date, and therefore there is no need to make any further reservation. Pass holders are encouraged to lock in their Priority Reservation Days during the Early Season time window.

As pass holders use their Priority Reservation Days during the Core Season, they can book additional reservations, maintaining up to 7 reservations at a time (or however many days of access are remaining on their pass for a particular destination). Week-of reservations are separate and don’t count toward your Priority Reservation Days.

Epic Pass Coverage

Included FREE for all pass holders, Epic Coverage provides full or prorated cash refunds for certain personal events and resort closures. Personal events include job loss, stay at home order, injury or sickness, student transfer, pregnancy, visa rejection, jury duty, military service, employee transfer, and death.

Resort closures between December 8th and April 4th that are caused by disease (e.g. COVID-19), war, terrorism, or a natural disaster are also covered. A natural disaster is defined as flood, hurricane, tornado, earthquake, fire, or volcanic eruption.

Epic Coverage only applies to resorts owned by Vail Resorts. Pass holders must choose if they want their coverage to be based on their Priority Reservation Days or Core Season resort closures.

For Core Season resort closures, you must also choose whether you want the coverage to apply for a single resort or all resorts included on your pass. All Epic Coverage preferences must be finalized by December 7, 2020. If you don’t make your elections by this deadline, your coverage will automatically default to the “Core Season” and “All Resorts”.

Priority Reservation Days

  • Unused: If you cannot secure your Priority Reservation Days by the end of the Early Season window, and you don’t use your pass during that time, then you can request a full refund. Note the refund must be requested prior to December 7th.
  • Cancelled: If any of your Priority Reservation Days are cancelled due to a qualifying event, such as COVID-19, and you’re unable to access the reserved day and resort you requested for during the Early Season reservation window, then you can request a proportional, prorated refund between May 1 – May 31.

Core Season Resort Closures

  • Primary Resort: If the resort you selected closes any day during the Core Season due to a qualifying event and prevents you from using your pass, then you can request a proportional, prorated refund between May 1 – 31.
  • All Resorts: If all of the resorts on your pass are simultaneously closed due to a qualifying event for 7+ consecutive days and prevent you from using your pass, then you can request a proportional, prorated refund between May 1 – 31.

Personal Event

  • Terms: If you have a qualifying personal event during the Core Season and have skied less than 7 days, then you can request a proportional, prorated refund within 30 days of the event occurring. The use of your pass at Vail Resorts destinations and partner destinations, either in or outside of the Core Season, count towards the number of days you have skied when determining refund eligibility.
  • Refund Calculation: Your refund will be based on the price you paid for your 2020/21 pass and the number of days you ski.
    • 0 days skied = 100% refund
    • 1 day skied =  86% refund
    • 2 days skied = 71% refund
    • 3 days skied =  57% refund
    • 4 days skied = 43% refund
    • 5 days skied = 28% refund
    • 6 days skied =  14% refund
    • 7+ days skied = not eligible for a refund

Ikon Pass COVID-19 Policies & Procedures

The Ikon pass is operated by Alterra Mountain Company and includes 44 destinations across the United States, Canada, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Chile. Compared to Epic, Ikon’s COVID-19 policies and procedures vary more resort to resort. This is because only 15 of the skiing destinations are actually owned by Alterra.

The rest are considered partner destinations and are independently owned and operated. Therefore, the following rules are in place for Alterra-owned destinations but not necessarily partner destinations. Be sure to check the individual resort’s website for the most accurate, up-to-date information regarding their policies.

Ikon Capacity Management & Reservations

Access to Ikon ski destinations will be prioritized for season pass holders. The number of daily lift tickets made available will be tightly regulated. Alterra-owned resorts require guests to purchase their lift tickets advanced online and will not have walk-up ticket window sales.

Some undated lift ticket products will be discontinued as well until further notice. In addition, shuttles will run at reduced capacity, and guests will not be permitted to congregate or tailgate in parking lots.

Some ski resorts on the Ikon pass have opted to require skiing reservations or parking reservations to help manage capacity. Ikon pass holders can start making reservations on November 9, 2020, using their account on ikonpass.com or through the Ikon Pass app.

Reservations can be made throughout the ski season, subject to each resort’s capacity. Parking reservations are required for all guests visiting the mountain, regardless of whether you plan to ski or snowboard.

Skiing Reservations

You can reserve up to the number of access days included on your pass per destination. For example, Ikon Base Pass holders get 5 days at Arapahoe Basin and thus can reserve up to 5 days in the reservation system for that resort. Reservations cannot be made on the same day for more than one Ikon destination.

For Ikon Pass destinations requiring reservations, Friends & Family tickets will not require a separate reservation. However, these tickets will only be accepted when accompanied by an Ikon Pass holder with a valid reservation. Ikon has stated that more details will be announced within the next few weeks, including policies around last-minute reservations and cancellations.

Parking Reservations

Parking reservations are required for all guests, even if you’re not skiing at the resort. Only one individual per vehicle needs to have a reservation. Same day reservations are permitted if available. You can have up to a total of 14 days reserved at a time during the season, with 7 Advanced Days and 7 Week-Of Days.

The Advanced Days can be booked for any time in the season, such as for a planned family vacation or long weekend. On the other hand, the Week-Of Days allow you to book days of skiing and riding on an ongoing, weekly basis. As your Advanced Days fall into the current 7-day window, they become Week-Of days, which allows you to book more Advance Days.

Ikon Pass Coverage: Adventure Assurance

Included FREE for all pass holders, Adventure Assurance provides full or prorated credits for resort closures related to COVID-19, as well as the option to defer your pass to the 2021-22 season if you do not use it. Adventure Assurance is included on the Ikon Pass, Ikon Base Pass, and Ikon Base Plus Pass.

A destination is considered closed if not a single gondola or chairlift runs during normal operating hours due to COVID-19. Pass holders have the option to apply coverage to One Eligible Destination or All Destinations on their pass.

The deadline to make this selection already passed on October 1, 2020. If you purchase your pass now or did not make an election prior to the deadline, the coverage defaults to All Destinations. This includes all North American Ikon Pass destinations, Alterra-owned and partnerships, except for CMH Heli-Skiing.

Resort Closures due to COVID-19

  • One Eligible Destination: The selected resort must be closed due to COVID-19 at least 7 full consecutive days or 21 full days between December 10, 2020 and April 11, 2021 for pass holders to receive a proportional, prorated credit. Credits are calculated based on the percentage of days the selected resort is closed because of COVID-19 during this defined time window.
  • All Destinations: Any North American Ikon Pass resort must be closed due to COVID-19 for at least one full day between December 10, 2020, and April 11, 2021 for pass holders to receive a proportional, prorated credit. Credits are calculated based on the number of days any of these destinations are closed due to COVID-19 divided by the total number of possible ski days at all North American Ikon Pass resorts during this defined time window.

Deferrals

  • Definition: Unused 2020-21 Ikon Pass products can be deferred for credit toward a winter 2021-22 Ikon Pass product. An Ikon Pass product is defined as “unused” if the pass and Friends and Family vouchers associated with the pass have not been scanned or used to access any Ikon Pass destination after June 4, 2020.
  • Terms: Deferral requests can be submitted between September 10, 2020 and April 11, 2021. Once a deferral request is made, it’s final. Credits are non-transferable and must be used by the pass holder deferring the pass. This means you cannot use your deferral credit for a friend or family member.
  • Credit Redemption: In addition, if you choose to purchase a 2021-22 Ikon pass that costs less than your deferral credit, you cannot use the remaining credit toward another purchase. The credit can only be used on a single Ikon Pass product, so any remaining balance will be forfeited. Alternatively, if you choose to purchase a 2021-22 Ikon pass that costs more than your deferral credit, you will need to pay the price difference. This applies even if you are buying the same Ikon pass product but the price increases next season.

COVID-19 Reservation Policies by Region

Below you will find the COVID-19 reservation policies for most of the major resorts in North America. The information below is subject to change, so be sure to check out the details link for the specific resort you’re interested in visiting. Also, make sure to review CDC guidelines on traveling before booking your next ski trip.

The scheduled opening date is an estimate and could change depending on snow accumulation and local regulations. Also, although some resorts do not require this, it is highly recommended to buy your lift ticket in advance. Many resorts are limiting the number of daily lift tickets sold, so guarantee your spot by purchasing your ticket online before you head up to the hill.

Note that the Mountain Collective Pass is not listed in the data below because current reservation requirements do NOT apply to these pass holders. If that changes, the data will be updated accordingly.

Face Covering FAQs

Epic guidelines state that while face coverings are not required during the physical acts of skiing and snowboarding if you’re maintaining proper physical distance, it’s still recommended to do so. Ikon guidelines state that face coverings are encouraged while outdoors, especially while in the vicinity of others, but are not required unless otherwise posted (e.g. such as in lift lines or on chairlifts).

Epic guidelines state that the type of face covering you can wear includes a cloth neck gaiter or other type of material that completely covers your mouth and nose. Ikon does not explicitly state what type of face coverings are acceptable, but it’s assumed that gaiters and buffs are acceptable as long as they cover your nose and mouth.

Epic guidelines state that face coverings are required in every part of their operation without exception. If you’re unable or unwilling to wear a face covering, you will not be allowed access. The only exception, per CDC guidelines, is for children under 3 years old. Ikon does not explicitly state if they are permitting any exemptions.

Ski Tips During COVID-19

  • Masks
Make sure to bring multiple face masks and skiing masks with you. As you’re working hard shredding down the slopes, your breath can get your mask wet. Having an extra, dry ski mask can make the difference between having a fun day vs. an uncomfortable one out on the mountain. It will also be helpful to keep a light face mask on hand to wear indoors. This way you’re not sweating through your thicker ski mask inside the lodge.
  • Equipment Rentals
Reserve your rental gear in advance. Some rental shops may require you to schedule an appointment to prevent crowds. You can also look to see if delivery services are available and have your gear dropped off directly at your hotel.
  • Lockers/Changing Rooms
Many resorts will be limiting access to lockers and changing rooms this season. Make sure to research this or call in advance before making it a part of your plan to use those facilities.

Many resorts will be limiting access to lockers and changing rooms this season. Make sure to research this or call in advance before making it a part of your plan to use those facilities.
  • Shuttles
Most resorts will be running their shuttles at reduced capacity. Make sure to budget extra time to make it on time to first chair!
  • Non-Skiers
If you’re planning to travel with family members or friends that don’t ski or snowboard, make sure there are other things for them to enjoy near the resort. You may need to make reservations in advance for certain activities.
  • Après Ski
You may need to find some new après ski activities since the full-service bars will likely remain closed on-mountain. If the resort you’re staying at has a nearby town, you may have better luck finding a bar or outdoor patio to enjoy a beverage after a long day of skiing.mittens without any kind of abrasion resistant reinforcement on the palms may not be quite as durable.
  • Hotel Amenities
Certain amenities, such as hot tubs or fitness centers, may not be open. Make sure to research or ask the hotel directly before booking.
  • Lunch
Not only is it cheaper to bring your own food and water, but it could also be more convenient given that restaurants will be reducing their capacity. Stay safe by spending less time in the lodge and enjoying your lunch outside.
  • Dinner
Consider booking lodging where you have your own kitchen. Cooking meals in, rather than going out, minimizes your contact with others and saves you more money. If you’re like me and not a fan of the idea of cooking on vacation, then get takeout from a local restaurant instead.
  • Download Your Pass App
Both Epic and Ikon have smartphone apps you can download in advance. Set up your favorite destinations and stay up-to-date with the most current safety information and weather conditions.

Final Thoughts

With ski season being cut short for spring 2020, we understand that everyone is anxious to get back to the mountains this winter. Know that ski resorts are working extra hard to make this a fun and safe season for everyone. We hope this is a useful resource and gives you an idea of what to expect at your favorite ski hill given COVID-19. See you out on the slopes (at a safe, 6-ft. distance)!
